| A review of Michael Swearngin's new art book Leather Red by Jon Litton. |
Michael Swearngin, known for his bold use of color and strong sense of design, has produced this small volume that combines some of his paintings along with his personal philosophy.
Subtitled "Paintings and Thoughts," the artist tells the reader at the outset,
"It is through my art form that I intuitively paint to express the rugged spirit of the American West in my contemporary style."
He goes on to note,
"Every painting is an exploration of these experiences, and my objective as an artist is to share them with the viewer."
The book is beautifully crafted. As one turns the pages, Michael's paintings are found on alternate right or left pages, always set against a black background that enhances the boldness of his designs. The page facing each painting is stark white, and in the middle there is both the title of the work along with a poetic expression that relates superbly to the subject of the piece.
For example, the painting titled "Teach the Children the Ways of the Father" depicts a young future cowboy intent upon instruction being given by his father who clearly is an experienced hand. And opposite the painting, Michael has written,
"Touch the soul of young lives, give direction, wisdom and knowledge. Vision will encourage them to reach their goals and dreams."
And this is the pattern of the entire book - art and poetry combined.
Michael aptly ends his introduction by telling the reader,
"As you rest under a crescent moon, may these paintings and thoughts inspire you to realize your Dreams."
